Okay, so I don't blog very often during the summer. Maybe it's because I don't feel like I have anything interesting to contribute to the information superhighway. Maybe it's because I get too distracted with all the other things I could be doing with my time. Or maybe it's just because I go a little brain-dead during the summer months. But, in learning more about my new calling, I've decided that perhaps blogging about the mundane and boring every once in a while is an okay thing because it kind of acts like a journal. Besides, it's all about me any way, right? So, here's my second post of the week (*gasp*) to summarize the past few weeks.
As I mentioned, I got a new calling in my ward. I was a little bummed to be released from my previous position because I really enjoy teaching Relief Society. And, that calling was very straight forward and easy to execute. I knew exactly what was expected of me. My new calling will be a bit of a challenge for me, since I have never even heard of it before and I have recieved very little direction on how to execute the calling properly! So, here's to a few months on the learning curve! I've been called as the Redeem the Dead Committee Chairperson. I know it has to do with encouraging Family History and Temple Work, but the rest is still a little fuzzy. I suppose I should figure it out soon, though, because I have to speak in church about it in a few weeks! (Would you believe that it's been almost three years since I had to speak in church . . . in any of the wards I've been in?)
I got to visit with my friend Emily from college last week. I haven't seen her in literally years. We were in the same student ward when I was at BYU before my mission. In fact, we served in the Relief Society Presidency together for quite some time during my 3 years in the ward. Needless to say, our meetings (as often happens when friends serve in presidency positions together) were very frequently "rambunctious and off task!" Of course, I wouldn't have had it any other way! It was such a blast to see her in "mommy mode" with her two adorable and crazy kids! And, we had a nice chat. The "good time" was helped by the fact that she's one of my favorite people! ;-)
In attempting to make order of my classroom, I've spent several hours most every day the last few weeks in the cave. Yes, I will be teaching in a cave. I have no windows. There is no air conditioning. It's like 80 degrees in there. Sometimes it's like 80 million degrees in there. And, the teacher chair that was in the cave apparently belonged to someone else because it vanished one day. So, to save myself from having to sit on the hard, uncomfortable student chairs, I got a new teacher chair that has been approved by my personal massage therapist, AKA Danna. The fact that I got an AWESOME deal on it just adds to the goodness of the comfy chair.
Despite the hours and hours of time I've spent in my classroom trying to organize things, it's still a disaster area. And, I've spent hours covering and cataloging books due to the OCD mentioned in my previous post. There is something to be said about not attempting to cover and catalog two years worth of book order books all at the same time. I've still got tons of books to do. Stupid fetish.
My nephew, Corbin, who previously wouldn't even acknowledge my presence, has recently decided that I'm a cool auntie. I think, perhaps, my acquisition of Rock Band had something to do with this. He now comes in and almost immediately asks if he can play Rock Band. The moral of the story? Sometimes you have to dish out a little dough to earn favorite auntie status.
Today, I added a few "favorite auntie" points to the tally by taking several nieces and nephews (11 of them to be exact) and my sisters to the Discovery Gateway Children's Museum. I happened to obtain free tickets from a school presentation last year. Rather than the $8.50 per person admission, the cost ended up being about $1.13 per person. (We still had to purchase 2 tickets, but having 12 free admissions really cut down on the cost of the adventure!) It was a lot of fun to see the kids run around like lunatics with all the stuff there was to do there. Of course, the two youngest kids were the most entertaining to watch. They were perfectly content to play with the wind tunnel, and probably would have stayed there all day if we had let them! Next item on my Favorite Auntie To Do List: Build Drewser and Matthew a wind tunnel! (Who am I kidding . . . I'd play with it for hours, too!)

You ARE a cool Auntie!
Okay. I give up the favorite auntie status. You win!
Thanks for the tips on being a cool auntie.
And you know, I understand that book fetish. If we make plans in advance I can leave Danny to baby duty and I could come and help you. (Unless that fetish requires you and you ALONE to handle those book.) I'd understand. Sometimes it's just that way.
