5 for '10

Despite the thoughts I'm sure come to mind of any thrifty shopper as they read the title of this post, I am not talking about a really fantastic deal on shoes . . . or produce. I am, in fact, talking about my goals for the year 2010. Yes, I realize it is February and most people make resolutions in January. But who really keeps those any way?

My catchy "5 for '10" phrase is in an effort to help me remember my goals. I always find that rather that simply not meeting my goals, I forget what I had intended to do in the first place. So, really, is that not keeping resolutions? I think not. It's more of a brain cloud syndrome that I'm attempting to overcome. So, I set all of my resolutions to go with the theme of 5. (I vaguely recall mocking someone recently for a theme of "7" for a party . . . I hate feeling slightly hypocritical . . .)

My "5 for '10" goals

1. Leave school by 5:00 each night
I realize the irony of this goal. I've set it before and failed miserably. However, I figure it's always a good goal to leave work by a reasonable hour each day. And progress is progress, right? I have actually been doing fairly well with this one, with just a few extenuating circumstances. For instance, you wouldn't believe how hard it is to leave at 5:00 when you have to fight to use a temperamental copy machine. My solution? copy stuff several weeks in advance. It seems to be helping my 5:00 deadline quite a bit. Of course, the past few weeks I haven't been doing so great with this goal. Being absent from school for 6 days will do that to you. But I think I'm finally catching up from my vocal hiatus so I am back on track to leave work by 5:00.

2. Read 50 books
I know . . . 50 is not 5. But it is "five-oh!" I love to read. I have always loved to read. I was the kid that would stay up WAY too late at night reading a book because I just had to know what happened. Wait a minute . . . I still do that! Hence my self-imposed ban from certain books during the school year. And so, perhaps this goal is more of a goal on self discipline . . . the ability to read during the school year and put the book down when it's time for bed! As of right now, I have finished 5 books. I figure if I average about 4 a month, I'll be right on track. Of course, I'll read a lot more during June, July, and August because I won't have to be at work all day long! Any good books I should add to my "to read" list?

3. Go on 5 dates
Sadly, this is the goal I have the least hope of accomplishing. Leave work by 5:00 and have the self restraint to not take my entire filing cabinet home to plan? No problem. Read 50 books during the year while attempting to not have a lack of sleep all the time? A cinch. Go on a few dates . . . next to impossible. Okay, maybe not IMPOSSIBLE, but highly unlikely. But, aim high, right? My biggest obstacle to overcome on this goal is that I honestly don't know that many available guys. Call it an occupational hazard if you will. How many single male elementary teachers did YOU Have growing up? I realize I go to a single's ward. But I am on the older end of that single's ward . . . and on the younger end of the single adult wards. And so, I'm sort of in between potential fishing holes. Too big for the little fish, and too little for the big fish. Perhaps I simply need my friends at the market to supply me with good fish . . . not too big, not too little . . . but just right. (Translation: I'm not opposed to blind dates in order to meet this goal. But I'm not desperate, either . . . no creepy catfish! No one really enjoys those, do they?) Sadly, that is what I'm resigned to . . . having other people fish for me. And if I fail at this goal, 2 out of 3 isn't too bad!

Hey, goals are great whenever you start them! I like your remembrance phrase. I'm stoked about goals this year! Hmmm, good books... Aaron bought me this one called "The Swan Maiden" for Christmas. It was fun, BUT I felt the author could have developed the story a little better. Still a cute book though. If you like learning new and interesting facts on the history of the world "Salt" is a great book. I haven't read it yet (Aaron left it in Utah), but he's always telling me what he learned from that book. Good luck on your goals!

That's smart to have a catch phrase. I have the same problem with goals--only I usually start out with so many that I never remember what it was I wanted to focus on and therefore never get it done... So this year I have my big long list posted right by my computer!! I think your method of having a catch phrase that represents 3 goals is probably even more effective.

As for reading books....let's see--last night I was up until 1:30 am to finish one...and the night before I was up until 1 am to finish a different one... I should probably add your goal to my list!!

Glad you're feeling better and have been able to catch up. That was always tough for me. MIssing just one or two days even, it seemed like it took me several weeks to catch up.

As for dates--like I said, I know one good guy, with some direction in his life but last time we talked, he didn't seem open to blind dates. Anyway, I can't really picture you with him but then again I couldn't really picture myself with Danny Vickers so...

If young is okay--we just had a missionary return from Brazil and he was awesome enough to come help us move our piano, the 3rd day he was home and without ever really meeting us beforehand. He looks like a giant teddy bear and if he's anything like his totally AWESOME parents he's probably a total sweetheart, too. Of course, I'm thinking someone more punkish might fit you better...*grin*
